MBABANE- Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Senator Pholile Shakantu, has reinforced Eswatini’s growing international partnerships following a strategic meeting with the United Kingdom Special Envoy to the Commonwealth, Mr. John Virgeo.
The Special Envoy was introduced by the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Eswatini, H.E. Colin Wells, highlighting the continued strength of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Discussions centred on sharpening Eswatini’s priorities within the Commonwealth framework, with a clear focus on sustainable development, expanding trade and investment opportunities, and enhancing resilience to climate change. The engagement reflects Eswatini’s proactive approach to leveraging international platforms for national development.
The timing of the meeting is significant as the country prepares for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2026 (CHOGM 2026), scheduled for November in Antigua and Barbuda. The global gathering is expected to unlock new opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and economic growth among member states.
Both parties explored practical pathways to deepen cooperation, with particular emphasis on aligning Eswatini’s development priorities with broader Commonwealth initiatives. There was strong consensus on positioning the country as an attractive destination for strategic investment, especially in sectors that support inclusive growth and long-term sustainability.
The meeting also underscored the importance of maximising CHOGM 2026 as a platform to showcase Eswatini’s potential and attract meaningful partnerships. By presenting a clear and forward-looking development agenda, the country is poised to strengthen investor confidence and expand its global reach.
Importantly, the engagement reaffirmed the longstanding and mutually beneficial relationship between Eswatini and the United Kingdom. Both sides expressed a shared commitment to advancing common values and delivering impactful outcomes through the Commonwealth.
As preparations for CHOGM 2026 gather pace, Eswatini continues to demonstrate strong leadership and ambition on the global stage, positioning itself to harness international cooperation for sustainable growth and national prosperity.
