MBABANE – Eswatini has strengthened its long-term quest to qualify for the FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after unveiling Spanish football development expert Toumen Parello Palou as the country’s new FIFA Technical Development Scheme (TDS) Coach.
The Spaniard was officially introduced at Sigwaca House on July 20, and will spend the next two years in the country after being dispatched by FIFA to help identify and nurture future football stars.
Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Technical Director Boy ‘Bizza’ Mkhonta said the coach’s mandate is not focused on immediate results, but on building a strong foundation for the future through youth development.
Mkhonta said Palou would spearhead a long-term football development programme targeting young players, particularly at Under-13 level, with the aim of unearthing talent capable of taking Eswatini football to greater heights.
“This is a long-term development project. The focus will be on identifying and developing young talent that can eventually form the backbone of our national teams in the future,” said Mkhonta.
The arrival of the Spanish coach comes at a time when Eswatini is dreaming of qualifying for its first-ever FIFA World Cup and AFCON finals. The country has increasingly invested in grassroots football as part of efforts to strengthen the national team’s competitiveness on the international stage.
Palou also arrives from a nation currently celebrating football success. Spain were crowned FIFA World Cup 2026 champions after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final, securing their second world title and reaffirming the country’s reputation as one of football’s leading development nations.
With FIFA now placing a Spanish development specialist in Eswatini, local football authorities hope the expertise that has helped produce world-class talent in Spain can contribute towards shaping the next generation of Sihlangu stars and bringing the country’s World Cup and AFCON ambitions closer to reality.
