PIGGS PEAK- Acting Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Eswatini, Jose Becerra, has reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to strengthening human rights, democratic governance and civic participation through the launch of the LILUNGELO LAKHO – “MY RIGHT” project.
Speaking at the launch on yesterday, Becerra described the initiative as an important step towards promoting a society where human rights, transparency, equality and the rule of law remain central to national development.
He said the EU views its collaboration with African countries, including Eswatini, not as a transactional arrangement but as a shared journey towards sustainable development grounded in mutual respect and universal values.
According to Becerra, economic growth, peace and innovation cannot be separated from the advancement of human rights and the strengthening of democratic governance.
He highlighted the importance of empowering local communities, supporting independent institutions and amplifying the voices of civil society across communities.
> “Dialogue and exchange are key to create an enabling environment to indeed make ‘Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials’,” Becerra said.
The Acting Ambassador acknowledged that democratic governance can take different forms depending on a country’s culture and traditions, noting that the EU recognises the importance of engaging in dialogue with governments while promoting universal human rights principles.
The LlLUNGELO LAKHO project today implemented through collaboration between government, civil society, the National Human Rights Commission, media and other partners, seeks to empower citizens and strengthen accountability and coordination among stakeholders.
Becerra said the project is designed to promote stronger cooperation between civil society, authorities and communities while creating an enabling environment for citizens to understand and exercise their rights.
He further stressed that the initiative is not about imposing solutions, but about investing in a collaborative ecosystem where independent institutions and state actors work together to safeguard citizens’ rights.
The project also seeks to amplify local voices, strengthen institutional frameworks, promote ethical journalism and demonstrate that democracy, human rights and the rule of law are essential foundations for a prosperous future.
Becerra expressed confidence that the partnership would contribute to addressing the needs of vulnerable groups while strengthening local institutions and community participation.
He concluded by reaffirming the EU’s commitment to remaining engaged with the Government and people of Eswatini, saying the project would add an important element to the country’s efforts to advance human rights and inclusive development.
