MBABANE– They did not return home with gold, silver or bronze hanging around their necks. Instead, Team Eswatini arrived home carrying something far more powerful hope, experience and a renewed determination to ensure the next generation of athletes stands proudly on the Commonwealth Games podium.
As the team touched down at King Mswati III International Airport on Tuesday after competing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, they were welcomed not as defeated athletes, but as pioneers who had tested themselves against the world’s best and returned with invaluable lessons for the country’s sporting future.
Representing Eswatini in athletics, boxing, judo and swimming, the nation’s athletes displayed courage and resilience throughout the Games. Several competitors recorded Personal Bests and Season Bests, proving that Eswatini’s athletes are steadily closing the gap on the world’s elite. Every race completed, every bout contested and every finish line crossed reflected months of sacrifice, discipline and unwavering belief.
The Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council (ESRC) applauded the athletes and coaches for representing the Kingdom with pride, saying their performances have laid another important foundation for the country’s sporting journey.
While medals remained out of reach in Glasgow, the Games offered something equally significant a clearer understanding of the standards required to compete at the highest level. For many of the athletes, sharing the arena with Commonwealth champions was an experience that will shape their careers and inspire young emaSwati dreaming of wearing the national colours.
Determined to turn today’s lessons into tomorrow’s victories, the ESRC and the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) have already shifted their attention to the future. The two organisations are working together to strengthen the country’s athlete development pathway through the inaugural Eswatini National Youth Games, scheduled for 14 to 17 August.
The historic competition will bring together the country’s brightest young sporting talent alongside invited athletes from Lesotho and Seychelles. More than just a tournament, the Youth Games are expected to become the starting point for identifying, nurturing and preparing athletes capable of competing confidently on the continental and global stage.
The initiative reflects a growing belief that international medals are not won in a single competition they are built over years of investment, coaching, opportunity and hard work at home.
For Team Eswatini, Glasgow was never just about chasing medals. It was about planting seeds of belief, raising the country’s sporting standards and proving that every Personal Best achieved today brings the nation one step closer to standing on the Commonwealth podium tomorrow.
As one chapter closes, another begins. The road to future Commonwealth success now starts on home soil, where young athletes are preparing to turn the dreams of an entire nation into reality.
