MBABANE – The Government of Eswatini has promised to grow tourism without harming the environment. Minister of Tourism Jane Mkhonta-Simelane says the sector must create jobs, protect culture, and give benefits to local communities.

The minister was represented by Under Secretary Hlobisile Dlamini at Matsamo Lake Tourism Park. She said Eswatini welcomed about 964 880 international visitors in 2024. That was a 14.5%  increase from 202. She called it proof of resilience after COVID-19.

She said the country must aim higher and grow smarter. Growth must not damage the environment, culture, or people. Every new tourism project will need strong environmental checks. Hotels and lodges will be urged to follow green standards.

She said communities should not only watch tourism, but own it. They must get training, jobs, and income. Local crafts and food should supply lodges so that money stays in villages. The minister also stressed infrastructure. Tourists expect safe transport, clean toilets, clear signs, and good roads. She said such services will raise Eswatini’s image.

She linked these goals with the Nkwe! Declaration, which calls for sustainability, cross-border tourism, and eco-certification.By 2027, the target is two million international visitors and more than E2 billion in revenue. The minister said this will be reached in a way that protects both people and nature.

She called on private businesses, communities, and ministries to work together. She said Eswatini must show the world that it can grow tourism in a way that is fair, safe, and sustainable.
