MBABANE – Green Lightning won hearts despite suffering a heartbreaking 51-50 defeat to defending champions at the Find the Ball Netball Tournament in Botswana after an unforgettable contest decided in the final minute.
Green Lightning produced one of their bravest performances of the season, narrowly losing 51-50 to the defending champions during the Find the Ball Netball Tournament at the University of Botswana.
Although the final whistle ended in disappointment, the Eswatini side walked away with their heads held high after pushing the reigning champions to their absolute limit in a thrilling contest that kept spectators on the edge of their seats from the first centre pass to the last.
Determined to make their mark, Green Lightning entered the court with confidence and the belief that victory was within reach. Their fast-paced attacking play, disciplined defence and accurate shooting ensured they matched the champions goal for goal throughout all four quarters.
The encounter remained fiercely contested, with neither side willing to surrender control. Every turnover, interception and successful shot was met with loud cheers as both teams displayed skill, resilience and remarkable composure under pressure.
Green Lightning’s relentless effort paid off as they levelled the scores at 50-50 heading into the final minute, raising hopes of a famous victory over the tournament favourites.
However, the defending champions drew on their experience when it mattered most. They patiently maintained possession before creating an opening inside the shooting circle and calmly converted the decisive goal to edge ahead 51-50.
Despite the narrow defeat, Green Lightning earned widespread admiration for matching the defending champions in every aspect of the game. Their fearless approach, teamwork and determination demonstrated the growing strength of Eswatini netball on the regional stage.
The performance also highlighted the team’s resilience and fighting spirit, qualities that kept them competitive until the very last second against one of the strongest sides in the tournament.
While the result did not go their way, Green Lightning left the University of Botswana with renewed confidence and valuable experience that will strengthen them for future competitions.
Sometimes sport is measured not only by victories but by courage shown in the face of adversity. Green Lightning may have fallen by a single goal, but their spirited display proved they are a team capable of challenging the very best and inspiring netball supporters across Eswatini.
