BUHLENI— From storm-related disruption to a celebration of academic achievement and cultural pride, Herefords High School has demonstrated that adversity does not have to stand in the way of progress.
Following that the school was greatly affected by the storm December last year and learners getting back to class later this year but that did not stop the learners from doing well.
The school’s Speech and Prize-Giving Day and SiSwati Culture Day brought together learners, teachers, parents, community leaders and education stakeholders to celebrate under the theme “Embracing Academic Excellence and Culture.”
The occasion provided an opportunity to reflect on how the school community remained united despite the difficulties caused by the storm that disrupted its operations.
Mayiwane Inkhundla Member of Parliament Sicelo “Khungankhosi” Dlamini commended the school community for remaining committed to education during the challenging period.
He thanked parents for the sacrifices they make to ensure their children attend school, while urging them to continue supporting the institution by paying school fees to enable the smooth continuation of classes.
Dlamini stressed that education requires a collective effort, with parents, teachers, learners and the wider community each having a role to play in ensuring that children receive the education they deserve.
Meanwhile, Principal Busisiwe Mdluli praised the teaching staff for remaining dedicated to their duties despite the challenges faced by the school.
She emphasised that the commitment of teachers, together with support from parents and the community, was critical in helping learners remain focused on their studies.
The resilience of the school was also reflected in the recognition of learners who excelled academically. Their achievements served as evidence that difficult circumstances can be overcome through determination, discipline and hard work.
The event further celebrated the cultural identity of the learners through SiSwati Culture Day, reinforcing the message that academic advancement and cultural preservation should complement each other.
Rainbow Stationery Director Mbongiseni Malinga was also recognised for supporting the school with stationery and food. His pledge of a cow to the teaching staff was a gesture of appreciation for teachers’ dedication to learners.
For Herefords High School, the celebrations were therefore not simply about prizes and performances. They represented a community that had weathered adversity and emerged with renewed determination to protect education, celebrate achievement and preserve its cultural heritage.
The day ultimately demonstrated that when a school community stands together, challenges can become a source of strength rather than a barrier to success.
