MBABANE – His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the rule of law, transparency, and the protection of life following a tragic murder incident involving a serving Correctional Officer in Mankayane.

In a media release issued on Thursday, HMCS confirmed that the incident was promptly and formally reported to the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS), with investigations currently underway. The department emphasised that it is fully cooperating with law-enforcement authorities to ensure that due process is followed and that justice prevails.

While the incident has understandably caused shock and distress, HMCS’s swift and responsible response has been widely noted as a demonstration of institutional accountability and professionalism. The department clarified misinformation circulating in some quarters, categorically dismissing false reports that the officer involved was on the run. HMCS confirmed that the officer was accompanied to the police station following the incident, underscoring its commitment to lawful and transparent procedures.

HMCS unequivocally condemned all forms of violence, reiterating that such acts stand in direct contradiction to the values and mandate of the institution. As a body entrusted with maintaining discipline, rehabilitation, and justice, the department stressed that it does not shield wrongdoing and will always act in accordance with the law, regardless of the circumstances or individuals involved.

The incident has deeply affected the Correctional Services fraternity, particularly given that the officer involved had no prior record or indication of violent behaviour. HMCS described the situation as both shocking and difficult to comprehend, highlighting the human complexity of those who serve within security institutions and the importance of strong ethical foundations, mental wellness, and support systems.

Beyond the immediate investigation, the department’s response has been marked by empathy and compassion. HMCS extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, and loved ones affected by the tragedy. In doing so, the institution acknowledged the profound human cost of the incident and reaffirmed the value it places on life and dignity.

Observers note that HMCS’s approach reflects a broader commitment to strengthening public trust through openness, cooperation with authorities, and clear communication. By resisting speculation and prioritising lawful processes, the department has demonstrated leadership during a period of heightened public sensitivity.

HMCS also placed its trust in God to guide and sustain all those affected, reflecting the values of compassion, accountability, and unity that remain central to public service in Eswatini. The department encouraged the public to allow investigations to proceed without interference, misinformation, or premature conclusions.

As the matter continues under police investigation, HMCS has assured the nation that it remains steadfast in upholding justice, discipline, and ethical conduct within its ranks. The institution reiterated that isolated incidents, while deeply painful, do not define the values or dedication of the many men and women who serve diligently to protect society and uphold the law.

In reaffirming its principles during a difficult moment, His Majesty’s Correctional Services has signalled its determination to emerge from the tragedy guided by integrity, accountability, and respect for the rule of law.
