LOBAMBA – Thousands of Imbali left the Umhlanga arena with smiles on their faces and food parcels in their hands after His Majesty King Mswati III gave every maiden who attended this year’s Umhlanga Reed Dance a special food package as they prepared to return to their respective chiefdoms.
The customary royal send-off brought the eight-day cultural event to a warm and positive conclusion, with Imbali receiving bread, juice, dates made from emaganu and chicken parcels before beginning their journeys home.
The food parcels are traditionally given to Imbali at the end of Umhlanga, providing a practical gesture of care as the maidens return home following their participation in the annual cultural ceremony.
For many of the maidens, the send-off was met with visible excitement and gratitude.
Tenele Mdletshe from Hhelehhele expressed her appreciation for the food parcels, saying, “Now I have food to cook at home.”
Imbali Lethukuthula Lukhele from Lamgabhi also thanked His Majesty for the food, sharing her appreciation with a smile as she prepared to leave the arena.
Nkosenhle Shabangu from Mshingishingini said she was happy with this year’s Umhlanga and grateful for the parcels received at the end of the celebrations.
The royal send-off came after Imbali had taken part in the various stages of this year’s Umhlanga, culminating in the Main Day where thousands of maidens performed before Their Majesties, invited guests, tourists and members of the public.
The conclusion of the ceremony was further marked by a spectacular fireworks display, which illuminated the night sky as Their Majesties prepared to leave Ludzidzini Royal Residence, adding a memorable finale to the celebrations.
Indvuna Yembali Bongiwe “Vivane” Hlatjwako described this year’s Umhlanga Reed Dance as a successful event while congratulating His Majesty King Mswati III on 40 years of reign.
She also wished Imbali safe travels as they returned to their respective chiefdoms and encouraged them to excel in their studies as they go back to school.
With their bags packed, parcels in hand and smiles on their faces, Imbali departed Ludzidzini carrying not only food for their homes but also memories of another colourful Umhlanga celebration.
