MBABANE– Today, Christians around the world are commemorating 2 000 years since Jesus Christ ascended into heaven, which occurred 40 days after He rose from the dead. Known as Ascension Day, this special time is filled with worship, prayer, and reflection.
According to the Bible, after Jesus rose from the dead, He remained on Earth for 40 days. He appeared to His followers, gave them final instructions, and promised to send the Holy Spirit to help them. Then, “He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight” (Acts 1:9).
In Eswatini, Christians are celebrating this holy day at the Mbangweni Royal Residence, as announced by Archbishop Samson Hlantjwako, the President of the League of Churches. He invited Christians across the country to come together to worship and remember the importance of Jesus’ ascension.
Hlantjwako said the event is not just about remembering the past but also about renewing hope for the future. “Ascension reminds us that Jesus is alive, watching over us, and that He will come back,” he said.
The Bible teaches that Jesus now lives in heaven, where He speaks to God on behalf of believers. “He always lives to intercede for them” (Hebrews 7:25). His followers are also reminded of His words: “I will come back and take you to be with me” (John 14:3).
Ascension Day also prepares believers for Pentecost, the day the Holy Spirit came to the disciples. Jesus said, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you” (Acts 1:8).
As Christians in Eswatini and around the world reflect on Jesus’ ascension, they are filled with hope, peace, and the courage to continue His mission on Earth.
