MBABANE – Eswatini has recorded significant development across multiple sectors over the past 40 years, largely attributed to its membership in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which has enabled regional cooperation, trade integration and sectoral development.
This was highlighted by Thobile Dlamini, Director of the Eswatini SADC Unit, who said the country has benefited from regional cooperation, strategic partnerships, and policy alignment under His Majesty King Mswati III’s leadership.
Dlamini stated that during His Majesty’s tenure as SADC Chairperson from 2016 to 2017, the region experienced notable progress in the implementation of key programmes. She described his leadership as impactful, noting that it strengthened unity among Member States and accelerated regional development initiatives.
She explained that one of the major gains has been the expansion of trade through agreements aimed at easing cross-border business. Chief among these is the SADC Free Trade Area (FTA), which has reduced tariffs and eliminated trade barriers, enabling smoother movement of goods and contributing to economic growth and job creation within the region.
Dlamini further noted that Eswatini has benefited from the liberalisation of sectors such as telecommunications and energy. This followed the country’s adoption and implementation of SADC model legislation, which required alignment of national laws with regional standards. She said these reforms opened opportunities for more players in the sectors, improving competition, efficiency, and service delivery.
In addition, SADC has supported infrastructure development through funding and technical assistance. Dlamini cited the Lomahasha–Namaacha water supply project, implemented by the Water Services Corporation, as a key example. The project is expected to benefit residents of Lomahasha and neighbouring communities in Mozambique, enhancing access to clean and reliable water supply.
These milestones reflect the value of regional integration and cooperation, positioning Eswatini to further leverage SADC programmes in driving inclusive economic growth, strengthening key sectors, and improving the quality of life for citizens in the years ahead.
