MANZINI – Athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Eswatini are transforming their lives through inclusive sport programmes led by Special Olympics Eswatini, which provides training, competition, and support across the country, empowering participants to build confidence, showcase their talent, and compete at both national and international levels.
The organisation offers year-round sports training in disciplines such as athletics, football, and netball, giving athletes a platform to develop skills while promoting physical fitness and teamwork.
Through regular competitions and community-based programmes, participants gain exposure and experience that prepare them for higher levels of competition, including regional and global events.

Special Olympics Eswatini also plays a crucial role in promoting social inclusion by bringing together athletes, families, schools, and volunteers. Unified sports programmes, where athletes with and without disabilities compete together, have helped to break down stigma and foster understanding within communities.
Coaches and volunteers continue to provide essential mentorship, ensuring that athletes are supported both on and off the field. Health initiatives under the programme also contribute to improved wellbeing by offering basic health screenings and education to participants.
Families and communities have welcomed the initiative, recognising the positive changes in athletes’ confidence, independence, and social interaction. The programme has proven that when given equal opportunities, individuals with disabilities can excel and inspire others.
Through its ongoing efforts, Special Olympics Eswatini continues to champion inclusion, demonstrating that sport is a powerful tool for unity, empowerment, and national pride.
