SITEKI – Nolwethu Nelisiwe Mkhatshwa, popularly known as Nelly Noll, is emerging as a prominent figure in the Afro-soul music scene. Recently named one of the Top 10 MTN Bushfire Firefly Nominees, she captivates audiences with her soulful melodies and heartfelt storytelling.
Growing up in the community of Ntakamuphila in the Lubombo region of Eswatini, she found solace in music from a young age. “Music became my safe space,” she reflects, explaining how she used it to express emotions that were often too complex for words. Over time, her passion for music evolved from a simple hobby into her true calling.
Nelly Noll’s musical journey began with an exploration of RnB and Afro-soul, where she blends personal stories with rhythms that reflect both modern influences and African roots. “It’s been a journey of growth, self-discovery, and healing,” she says. “I’m grateful for every step.”
Among her favorite tracks is “Mkhatshwa,” a deeply personal song that celebrates her roots and identity as a young woman from Eswatini. “With this song, I want everyone to celebrate themselves and remember where they come from,” she shares. Another significant piece, “Timbali,” honours young women in Eswatini and showcases the country’s rich cultural heritage. “It’s a celebration of beauty, tradition, and strength,” she adds.
Nelly Noll is driven by her belief in the healing power of music. “From a young age, I used music to express emotions and stories I couldn’t always share,” she explains. She recognizes that her journey can inspire others, motivating her to continue creating.
Participating in the Bushfire Firefly competition felt like a natural step for Nelly Noll. “Bushfire celebrates real African voices and creativity,” she says. “It honors culture and individuality, which is important to me as an artist.” Being chosen as a nominee is a tremendous honor for her, validating the hard work and passion she invests in her music.
What sets Nelly Noll apart is her honesty and openness. “My music is real and unfiltered,” she states. “Whether I’m singing about sadness, joy, or healing, I always try to be genuine.” This authenticity allows her to connect deeply with her audience. “My lyrics come straight from the heart,” she adds, emphasizing the importance of truthfulness in her artistry.
Despite the challenges of navigating a small industry with limited resources, Nelly Noll remains committed to her purpose. “I believe that music is what I’m meant to do,” she asserts. Messages from listeners expressing how her songs have impacted them inspire her to keep creating.
Looking forward, Nelly Noll is enthusiastic about her upcoming projects, including a new EP that explores her journey as an artist. She is eager to collaborate with other musicians in Eswatini and beyond. “My goal is to keep growing, creating, and representing where I come from on every stage I perform,” she states.
