NTFONJENI – The Lokhwishi Suspension Footbridge has officially been handed over to the community of Ntfonjeni Inkhundla in the Hhohho Region, marking a significant milestone in improving safe access and connectivity for residents.
The footbridge was constructed through a partnership involving the Microprojects Programme and Engineers in Action, with the support of students from the United States of America who came to Eswatini to contribute to the community development initiative.
The project is expected to make movement easier and safer for community members who previously faced challenges when crossing the area, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when water levels can make crossing difficult.
Director of the Microprojects Programme, Sibusiso Mbingo, highlighted the continued contribution of the programme towards improving community infrastructure across the country.
Mbingo stated that the Microprojects Programme has, to date, completed two Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) systems and 42 suspension footbridges, demonstrating its commitment to addressing critical infrastructure needs in communities.
He further acknowledged the contribution of the students from the United States, noting the importance of partnerships in accelerating development and creating infrastructure that responds directly to the needs of communities.
The involvement of Engineers in Action students has strengthened international cooperation while giving the students an opportunity to work alongside local communities and contribute practical skills towards sustainable development.
The Lokhwishi project is therefore more than just a bridge; it represents improved accessibility, safety and opportunities for the community. It is also a demonstration of what can be achieved when government programmes, development partners, students and communities work together towards a common goal.
The handover comes as part of ongoing efforts by the Microprojects Programme to implement community-centred infrastructure projects that improve the livelihoods of emaSwati and promote inclusive development.
