MANZINI– The Manzini Municipal Council and Manzini Regional Administration today officially launched the “Walk to Work” campaign, a citywide initiative aimed at promoting physical activity, mental wellness, and environmental responsibility.
Free parking will be provided from 8am to 12 noon to encourage residents to participate.
The launch, held at the Regional Administrator’s office on Thursday, November 27, 2025, was led by Chief Gija Dlamini, Regional Administrator for Manzini. “Today, we are here to unveil a campaign that is close to my heart and is a top priority for my office. I am speaking, of course, of the Manzini Walk to Work initiative,” Chief Gija said. He explained that the campaign addresses three critical challenges: rising non-communicable diseases (NCDs), mental health struggles, and environmental concerns.
Chief Gija highlighted that conditions such as hypertension and diabetes are increasing in the region, putting pressure on families and the health system. “We must move from treatment to prevention and empower our people with the knowledge and tools to live healthier lives,” she said. She also emphasized that walking to work can support mental well-being by reducing stress and anxiety, while fostering a culture that encourages self-care.
Mayor Wesley Dlamini described the initiative as a historic first for Manzini and possibly Eswatini. “Walking to work is a simple, practical, and powerful way to improve fitness, mental health, and community connection while reducing traffic congestion and pollution,” he said. He added that the campaign aligns with the city’s six-year Integrated Development Plan, which prioritizes sustainable urban living.
AMICAALL Director Sibongile Ndlela warned that lifestyle-related diseases, particularly among people living with HIV, are rising. She encouraged healthy eating and regular exercise, noting that many conditions can be prevented.
The Walk to Work campaign aims to inspire citizens, businesses, and institutions to adopt walking as part of daily life. Authorities hope it will grow into a long-term movement, promoting wellness, environmental responsibility, and a healthier, more sustainable Manzini.
