MBABANE – Minister of Education and Training, Hon. Owen Nxumalo, has vowed to transform Eswatini’s education system, making it more relevant to national priorities and global standards.
Speaking today, 5 November 2025, at Ndwandwe High School during the farewell for outgoing Form 5 students, the Minister highlighted the rollout of Competency-Based Education (CBE) and a new Four-Year Programme aimed at equipping students with skills for further studies and the workforce.
“In my term of office, we will improve our education system and make it more relevant. Competency-Based Education (CBE) is here to enhance our approach to education and ensure it aligns with the plea of Emaswati during Sibaya 2023,” said Minister Nxumalo.
The Minister was warmly welcomed by Principal C.V. Simelane, Schools Manager Lungelo Nhlengetfwa, and Ngwemphisi Member of Parliament Bhekibandla Vilakati. During his visit, he toured the school facilities before joining the programme, where pupils were recognised for academic excellence, leadership as prefects, athletic achievements, good behaviour, and received their Form 5 farewell gifts.
Last month, on 22 October 2025, the Ministry held a workshop on Competency-Based Education (CBE) and the new Four-Year Programme for secondary schools. The programme aims to align education with regional priorities and respond to national and industry needs, guided by directives from Sibaya 2023, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and other international protocols.
Under the Four-Year Programme, secondary education will now span Grades 8 to 11. After completing this cycle, students may transition to tertiary education, take AS/A Levels for studies abroad, or enter the workforce using the skills acquired. The workshop is being facilitated by Dr Richard Ingram from UNESCO, Switzerland.
Minister Nxumalo’s visit underscores the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that Eswatini’s education system not only meets global standards but also addresses the aspirations of the nation expressed during Sibaya 2023.
