Historic trip follows earlier diplomatic challenges

MBABANE– The President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Lai Ching-te, has arrived in Eswatini, marking his first official visit to the country since assuming office on 20 May 2024.

He touched down the King Mswati III International Airport on Saturday, May 2, 2026, according to a statement issued by Eswatini Government on its social media platforms. The visit is being widely viewed as a reaffirmation of the strong and enduring diplomatic relations between Eswatini and Taiwan, with both nations expected to deepen cooperation across key sectors.

Visit comes after missed royal celebration

President Lai’s arrival follows an earlier diplomatic setback when he was unable to attend the recent 40/58 double celebration of His Majesty King Mswati III, which marked 40 years of His Majesty’s reign and his 58th birthday.

According to reports, the Taiwanese President’s aircraft was denied flight clearance by several countries, including Madagascar, Seychelles and Mauritius.

The People’s Republic of China was widely alleged to have influenced the decisions of these countries, with claims of economic pressure being used to block the President’s travel.

Renewed commitment to bilateral relations

Despite the earlier challenges, President Lai’s successful arrival signals resilience in diplomatic engagement and underscores the importance of the relationship between the two nations.

Eswatini remains Taiwan’s only diplomatic ally in Africa, and the partnership has continued to deliver tangible benefits in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, education and infrastructure development.

Strengthening cooperation and shared vision

During his visit, President Lai is expected to engage in high-level discussions with government officials, focusing on expanding cooperation and exploring new opportunities for mutual growth.

The visit highlights a shared commitment to development, mutual respect and long-standing friendship, with both countries continuing to support each other on the global stage.

Symbol of enduring friendship

President Lai’s arrival has been met with a warm welcome, reflecting the close ties between the two nations and the importance of continued collaboration.

His visit not only marks a historic first since taking office, but also reinforces the strength of the Eswatini–Taiwan partnership in the face of external challenges.

As he sets foot in the Kingdom, the message is clear: the bond between Eswatini and Taiwan remains strong, resilient and forward-looking.
