MBABANE – The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has reaffirmed its commitment to improving road infrastructure and strengthening connectivity for rural communities through an assessment tour of ongoing and priority projects across the Shiselweni Region.
The tour commenced with an inspection of the Buhleni Pier Bridge, a critical piece of infrastructure that provides access to Buhleni Primary School, the Mawelawela community and surrounding areas. Ministry officials assessed the bridge’s condition and progress, noting its importance in facilitating the daily movement of learners, residents and businesses. According to information shared on the Ministry of Public Works and Transport Facebook page, the bridge remains a vital link that supports social and economic activities in the area.
The delegation also conducted a comprehensive assessment of roads in Mkhitsini, where officials evaluated the condition of existing routes and identified sections requiring maintenance and rehabilitation. The inspections focused on ensuring that road networks remain accessible and safe for motorists, public transport operators and communities that rely on them for essential services.
The assessment later extended to roads under the Gege Inkhundla, where the team examined key routes connecting communities to schools, health facilities and economic centres. The exercise forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to identify infrastructure priorities and allocate resources where they are most needed.
The latest assessments come as Government continues to prioritise investments in transport infrastructure to improve mobility, road safety and economic growth. In recent years, the Ministry has intensified efforts to rehabilitate damaged roads and bridges across the country, particularly in areas affected by heavy rains and flooding. Several bridge projects in the Shiselweni Region have been undertaken to improve resilience and ensure communities remain connected throughout the year.
Officials indicated that findings from the assessment tour will guide future maintenance and rehabilitation programmes. By strengthening road and bridge infrastructure, the Ministry aims to create safer transport networks, improve access to public services and stimulate local economic development.
The initiative highlights Government’s continued commitment to delivering reliable infrastructure that enhances the quality of life for emaSwati while supporting sustainable development across the country.
