EZULWINI – The 12th edition of the MTN Khemani Cycling Road Classic has been positioned as more than just a battle for cycling honours, with the Minister of Sport, Culture and Youth Affairs Bongani Nzima highlighting its potential to drive sports tourism and economic activity in Mankayane.
Speaking at the official launch of the race at MTN Eswatini’s Mahlalekhukhwini House yesterday, Minister Nzima said the annual cycling spectacle brings athletes, support crews and spectators to Mankayane, stimulating regional economic activity, hospitality and local tourism.
The 2026 edition will be staged on September 26, with Minister Nzima describing the Khemani Classic as a race that has become a “crown jewel” on the national sporting calendar.
He said the scenic Mankayane route not only provides a demanding challenge for cyclists but also offers an opportunity to showcase the Kingdom’s landscape to visitors.
“Sport is truly brought to life through action, consistency, and partnership,” said Nzima, stressing the importance of collaboration in sustaining sporting events of the calibre of the Khemani Classic.
The Minister also linked the event to government’s broader objectives for youth development and talent identification.
He said cycling teaches discipline, resilience and focus — qualities that the country needs to instil in the next generation of leaders and elite athletes.
With hundreds of riders from different age groups and backgrounds expected to take to the road, Nzima said the race also promotes active and healthy lifestyles.
“A healthy nation is a productive nation,” he said, pointing to the health and wellness benefits associated with cycling.
The Minister further encouraged cycling clubs across the country to mobilise their members and intensify preparations ahead of the race, with the aim of making the 12th edition the biggest turnout yet.
He commended the Eswatini Cycling Association for steering the sport’s national governing body and ensuring that the cycling calendar remains competitive and developmental.
He also paid tribute to the various cycling clubs, describing them as the heartbeat of the cycling community because of their camaraderie, competitiveness and mutual support.
A major part of the Minister’s address was dedicated to MTN Eswatini, which he thanked for its long-standing support as title sponsor of the Khemani Classic.
Nzima said MTN’s continued backing demonstrated that corporate citizenship goes beyond business, extending to investment in citizens’ physical wellbeing, athletic excellence and community sport development.
He also praised the Khemani Cycling Club organising committee for what he described as its relentless drive and contribution to race management and club administration.
The Minister officially declared the 12th edition launched, calling on cyclists to prepare fiercely while urging safety and sportsmanship on the roads of Mankayane.
The race is scheduled for September 26, 2026.
