MBABANE– Learners at Ekuthuleni High School were equipped with knowledge to prevent teenage pregnancy and substance abuse during a school dialogue held at the school this morning, with the National AIDS and STI Control Council (NATICC) encouraging young people to make informed choices that protect their education, health and future opportunities.
The dialogue provided learners with a safe and interactive space to openly discuss teenage pregnancy, including factors that can increase young people’s vulnerability. Learners identified peer pressure, poverty and other social and environmental influences among the contributing factors.
The discussion further highlighted the impact teenage pregnancy can have on young people’s lives, including interrupted education, school dropout, increased vulnerability to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and emotional stress.
The session also addressed substance abuse, with learners engaging on how harmful substance use can affect decision-making, relationships, academic performance and overall wellbeing.
NATICC used the dialogue to equip learners with practical information and confidence to navigate peer pressure, make responsible decisions and seek support when faced with challenges.
The engagement highlighted the importance of creating spaces where young people can openly discuss issues affecting their lives and gain information that can help them make choices that support their education and future.
Through school dialogues such as the one at Ekuthuleni High School, NATICC continues to engage young people on issues affecting their wellbeing while encouraging informed decision-making and positive choices.
