MBABANE– The National Disaster Risk Management Authority (NDRMA) is urging communities across western Eswatini to take immediate precautions as severe cold conditions and frost affect the country from today until August 12.
The warning follows forecasts from the Eswatini Meteorological Service indicating extremely low temperatures, potentially reaching 0°C or below, accompanied by rain and strong winds. The conditions could affect human health, crops, livestock and exposed water infrastructure, particularly in areas experiencing the lowest temperatures.
NDRMA is calling on farmers to protect sensitive crops and young seedlings from overnight frost, while livestock owners are urged to provide adequate shelter, sufficient feed and clean drinking water. Particular attention should be given to young, sick and weak animals, which are more vulnerable to severe cold.
Households and critical institutions are also encouraged to check exposed water pipes, taps and storage systems for freezing, leaks or damage. Where possible, residents should maintain an alternative water supply in areas where freezing could disrupt access to water.
The authority has cautioned the public against using fire or direct flames to thaw frozen pipes, as this could cause fires or damage the pipes.
As households increase their use of heaters, fires and other sources of warmth, NDRMA is further urging residents to observe fire safety measures. Heaters and open flames should be kept away from combustible materials, while fuel-burning appliances should be used only in adequately ventilated spaces to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and fires.
Young children, older persons, people living in poorly insulated homes, persons with disabilities, outdoor workers, farmers and people without adequate shelter have been identified among those requiring extra care during the cold period.
Community leaders, local authorities, schools, businesses and households are encouraged to check on vulnerable people, share official weather information and promptly report serious incidents.
NDRMA has called on the public to remain vigilant and follow official updates from the authority and the Eswatini Meteorological Service throughout the cold spell.
