NDZINGENI – The Member of Parliament for Ndzingeni Constituency Gcina Magagula has called on residents to actively help authorities combat copper cable theft, warning that the crime affects entire communities and should not be left to the police and law enforcement agencies alone.
Magagula urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, particularly people seen climbing electricity poles at night, burning cables or attempting to sell suspicious copper. The call comes amid concerns that cable theft can disrupt essential services and leave communities without reliable electricity and other infrastructure.
“This fight is not for the MP alone, nor for the police alone. If you see someone climbing a pole at night, if you see someone burning cables, if you see someone selling suspicious copper—report them,” the MP said.
He stressed that residents have an important role to play in protecting infrastructure in their communities, saying silence could allow perpetrators to continue stealing cables and damaging public infrastructure.
According to Magagula, copper cable theft does not only affect the individuals whose property is targeted, but has wider consequences for the community through service disruptions and the costs associated with repairing damaged infrastructure.
Residents were therefore encouraged to report suspected cable theft and other suspicious activities to the relevant authorities rather than confronting suspected offenders themselves.
The Member of Parliament said a united community effort was necessary to protect Ndzingeni and ensure that essential infrastructure remains available to residents.
The call also seeks to strengthen cooperation between communities, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders in preventing infrastructure-related crimes.
