MAYIWANE – Five months after a destructive storm tore through parts of Mayiwane, destroying school infrastructure and leaving some teachers without proper accommodation, newly-built teachers lodgings are now bringing relief and renewed hope to affected schools.

The houses, built by Government through the Ministry of Education and Training and Microprojects, were constructed at schools including Lugongolwane Nazarene Primary School and Matfuntini Primary School under Mayiwane Inkhundla. The project forms part of recovery efforts following the storm that struck the area on 2 December 2025.

For teachers, the new houses represent more than just buildings. They offer safety, dignity and a stable environment closer to the learners and communities they serve.

According to hon. Khunga Nkhosi, the reconstruction was a direct response to the destruction caused by the storm.

“The houses were constructed by government in response of the storm that attacked Mayiwane on 2 December 2025,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude for the support received during the recovery process. “We are grateful for the help we got from government in rebuilding what was destroyed,” he added.

The storm reportedly caused widespread damage across schools in the area, affecting classrooms, teachers houses and other infrastructure. Government later moved to rehabilitate damaged schools to ensure that learning conditions returned to normal.

Community members have welcomed the development, saying teachers deserve decent living conditions, especially after the difficult period many experienced following the disaster.

The rebuilding of teachers lodgings is also expected to improve morale among educators while strengthening the learning environment for pupils.

As reconstruction continues in affected areas, the completed houses stand as a visible sign of recovery and a reminder of the importance of protecting education infrastructure during times of crisis.
