LOBAMBA — In a notable gesture of support for the ongoing annual Umhlanga Reed Dance ceremony, Prince Majaha (also known by his regiment name Siliva) and Salman Mohamed (known by his regiment name Sambulelosemakhosi) have donated 70 000 bottles of 500ml soft drinks to His Majesty King Mswati III.
The donation, which is valued at about E500 000, consists of Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite and Stoney Ginger, was presented as traditional tetfulo (gifts) to assist with the costs and provisions associated with hosting the thousands of maidens (imbali) taking part in the cultural event.
The gifts from the prince and Sambulelo were part of the overall E28 million in tetfulo received by His Majesty the King received from citizens, companies, and organisations on Wednesday evening at Ngabezweni Royal Residence.
Soft drinks are a practical contribution given the large numbers of young women involved and the need for refreshments during the multi-day gathering.
His Majesty expressed appreciation towards everyone who contributed through tetfulo as he said that would ensure the maidens were well taken care of during the annual ceremony.
“Indeed the maidens will be able to carry their duties on full stomachs and this is all thanks to the many gifts that you have brought to the King. It is our culture to bring gifts to the King to assist in ensuring that there is always plenty to eat,” His Majesty said when addressing those who had brought the gifts.
Tetfulo contributions from government, companies, organisations and individuals routinely help cover food, refreshments, logistics and care for the participants.
Such gifts form part of longstanding cultural practice demonstrating loyalty and support for the monarchy and the ceremony that celebrates chastity, unity and Swazi heritage.
The Umhlanga Reed Dance is one of Eswatini’s most important national ceremonies.
Unmarried young women from across the kingdom gather to cut reeds, present them to the Queen Mother, and perform traditional dances.
The 2026 event began with registration on Tuesday, 25 August, with the main public day scheduled for 31 August at Ludzidzini Royal Residence.
