MBABANE Sambulo Khumalo, known professionally as Sam K, is turning personal loss into a powerful musical testimony of healing and hope.

Born in Sigcaweni in the Lubombo Region and raised by his grandmother after losing his mother at just one and a half years old, Sam K has channelled his early hardships into artistry that inspires.

Growing up with his younger brother under the care of their grandmother, who faced financial and emotional challenges, Sambulo discovered music as a source of comfort and expression. His journey gained momentum in Form Four in 2022, when he recorded his debut single, Imphilo. The song’s warm reception motivated him to release Mama, a heartfelt tribute encouraging young people to value and honour their mothers.

Sambulo’s dedication caught the attention of US-based supporter Ebony Tyson, who encouraged him to apply to Limkokwing University of Creative Technology. He enrolled in November 2024 for a three-year Music Design programme, where he honed his technical skills and gained deeper insight into music production. Alongside his studies, Sam K performed at events associated with MTN Bushfire, expanding his stage experience and connecting with wider audiences.

Now a rising tertiary artist, he is preparing to release his 12-track album, Tinyembeti Tentsandzane (“Orphaned Tears”), presented as two extended plays of six songs each. The project blends trap with Afro-pop and Afro-soul influences reminiscent of Inkabi Zezwe, focusing on themes of pain, resilience and healing.

Sam K explains that the album gives voice to those who endure suffering in silence. “This is pain shared for healing,” he says, hoping his music provides strength, comfort and reassurance to listeners navigating their own challenges.

From early adversity to artistic triumph, Sam K exemplifies the power of transforming hardship into inspiration. His journey reflects the resilience of Eswatini’s youth and showcases how personal stories, when expressed through art, can become a source of collective healing and empowerment.
