PIGG’S PEAK – A major military operation against illegal mining in northern Eswatini has resulted in the arrest of 11 suspected illegal gold miners, dealing a significant blow to what authorities believe is a cross-border criminal syndicate exploiting the country’s mineral resources.
The suspects were apprehended by members of the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) during an intelligence-led operation at Mbongose Hills in the Hhohho Region on June 26. They have since appeared before the Pigg’s Peak Magistrate’s Court, where they were remanded in custody until July 8, 2026, when a trial date is expected to be set.
The accused comprise both emaSwati and South African nationals who are alleged to have been involved in the illegal extraction and transportation of gold-bearing sand from the area. Investigators believe the suspects may be linked to a wider organised cross-border network involved in the unlawful exploitation of Eswatini’s natural resources.
The military operation yielded substantial recoveries. Soldiers seized approximately 7.82 tonnes of gold-bearing sand, which preliminary assessments indicate could produce around 53.8 grams of refined gold valued at approximately E172 000.
In addition to the suspected gold-bearing material, security forces also confiscated a large consignment of dagga with an estimated street value of E412 000, as well as a Taurus 92 pistol loaded with 11 rounds of live ammunition.
The combined value of all exhibits recovered during the operation exceeds E584 000, highlighting the scale of the alleged criminal enterprise.
The UEDF has described the operation as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat organised crime and protect Eswatini’s natural resources from illegal exploitation.
Investigations remain underway as authorities work to establish the full scope of the alleged syndicate, identify additional suspects and determine whether the network has broader cross-border links.
Meanwhile, the 11 accused remain behind bars pending their return to the Pigg’s Peak Magistrate’s Court on July 8, when the matter is expected to proceed with the setting of a trial date.
