MANZINI– Eswatini has moved to deepen its economic integration with South Africa after the Eswatini Investment Promotion Authority (EIPA), Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal (TIKZN) and UMhlosinga Development Agency (UMDA) signed a landmark Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on September 4, 2026.

The agreement was signed at the UNDP Sustainable Centre at the Mavuso Trade Centre during the ongoing Eswatini International Trade Fair (EITF) 2026, establishing a formal framework to accelerate cross-border trade, promote mutual investment, strengthen tourism cooperation and unlock economic opportunities along the regional corridor.

The partnership brings together three institutions with a shared objective of turning cross-border cooperation into practical business opportunities while addressing barriers that can constrain the movement of goods, services and investment between Eswatini and South Africa.

South African High Commissioner to Eswatini, Her Excellency Mmaikeletsi Dube, hailed the agreement as a significant milestone, saying it would strengthen the economic relationship between the two neighbouring countries.

Dube said the partnership would help “deepen bilateral economic ties, unlock cross-border trade, and foster sustainable regional development.”

Her remarks underscored the strategic importance of the agreement as both countries seek to strengthen economic cooperation and create greater opportunities for businesses operating across their shared border.

For EIPA, the signing represents an opportunity to turn regional connectivity into investment and trade gains.

EIPA Chief Executive Officer Sibani Mngomezulu said the MOU would “unlock strategic trade and investment along the regional corridor.”

Mngomezulu emphasised that EIPA would work closely with TIKZN and UMDA to ensure that the agreement produces tangible benefits rather than remaining only an institutional commitment.

The EIPA CEO said the authority would collaborate with its partners to ensure that the cross-border framework delivers “tangible economic opportunities and benefits for stakeholders across Eswatini.”

UMDA CEO Thembisile Khumalo described the partnership as a bridge towards stronger economic cooperation.

Khumalo said the strategic collaboration would serve as a “bridge for economic growth,” creating stronger links between businesses and institutions while opening new commercial opportunities along the regional corridor.

She said the partnership between UMDA, EIPA and TIKZN would help “deepen cross-border ties, unlock new commercial opportunities, and deliver long-term economic development.”

TIKZN Acting CEO Innocent Hlongwana placed particular emphasis on ensuring that regional economic cooperation reaches communities at grassroots level.

Hlongwana highlighted the “critical role of grassroots development and cross-border cooperation in driving economic growth,” noting that the partnership creates strategic linkages capable of connecting businesses with new opportunities.

He said the collaboration would “unlock tangible business opportunities, foster regional investment, and uplift local communities along the corridor.”

The agreement also opens opportunities for closer cooperation in tourism, a sector identified as an important driver of regional economic activity.

Speaking on behalf of the Eswatini Tourism Authority (ETA) CEO, Marketing Manager Wakhile Zwane pointed to lessons from existing tourism cooperation between Eswatini and KwaZulu-Natal.

Zwane said the MOU would help “grow the national tourism sector” by leveraging cross-border partnerships to increase regional travel, strengthen joint promotional initiatives and showcase Eswatini’s cultural attractions to wider markets.

The tourism component adds another dimension to the agreement, positioning the partnership not only as a trade and investment initiative, but also as a platform for strengthening the movement of visitors and promoting complementary tourism offerings across the region.

The signing comes as EITF 2026 places renewed attention on building partnerships capable of unlocking economic opportunities under its theme, “Unlocking Green Economy Opportunities.”

For local businesses, the significance of the MOU lies in its potential to create stronger pathways into regional markets, while investors could benefit from improved institutional coordination and greater access to opportunities across the corridor.

The three institutions are now expected to translate the framework into practical areas of cooperation, with trade facilitation, investment promotion, tourism development and stronger regional linkages forming part of the broader vision.

As EITF 2026 brings together businesses, investors, government institutions and development partners, the tripartite agreement sends a clear message that regional economic integration requires more than proximity — it requires deliberate partnerships capable of turning borders into gateways for trade, investment and sustainable growth.

The September 4 signing therefore marks an important step in positioning Eswatini and its regional partners to pursue a more connected and commercially vibrant economic future.
