MAFUTSENI – The Royal Eswatini Police Service acted swiftly, leading to the arrest of two 36-year-old men from the Mahlabane area in connection with an alleged attempted murder case following a violent assault that left a 31-year-old man seriously injured after a dispute over E200 escalated in Mzimpofu on April 28, 2026 at about 11pm.
What began as a casual evening outing among acquaintances has since turned into a deeply distressing incident that has left a young man hospitalised and a community grappling with shock over how a minor financial disagreement allegedly spiralled into extreme violence.
According to reports, the victim was assaulted with fists, kicks and sticks before being dragged along the tarmac. He was later allegedly thrown from an overhead bridge during the attack, sustaining severe injuries. He is currently receiving medical treatment at a health facility, where his condition is being closely monitored.
Residents in the area have expressed concern and disbelief, saying the incident has left fear and sadness within the community. Some community members have described the act as “senseless,” noting that disputes over small amounts of money should never result in such brutality.
Preliminary information suggests that the confrontation began over E200 that had allegedly been entrusted to the victim for safekeeping while he and others were walking to a drinking spot. When the money was later requested, the victim reportedly searched his pockets and explained that he had passed it to another acquaintance. This explanation is said to have triggered suspicion and anger among the group.
The situation reportedly escalated quickly, with two additional individuals allegedly joining the assault. What was once a social gathering reportedly turned violent within moments, leaving the victim severely injured.
Police confirmed that the two suspects were arrested on May 4, 2026, following investigations and witness statements. Authorities say inquiries are ongoing to determine the full circumstances and whether more individuals were involved.
Law enforcement officials have encouraged members of the public to resolve disputes peacefully, warning that even minor disagreements can lead to life-altering consequences.
