MBABANE- A major diplomatic breakthrough is taking shape in the Middle East, as the United States and Iran signal a coordinated pause in hostilities, raising optimism for a lasting peace agreement in one of the world’s most sensitive regions.

In a statement released from the White House, U.S. President Donald J. Trump confirmed that Washington would suspend planned military action against Iran for two weeks. The move follows high-level engagements involving Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, who played a key role in facilitating dialogue.

“I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double sided ceasefire,” said President Trump.

He added that the decision reflects significant progress already made through diplomatic channels.

“We have already met and exceeded all military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive agreement concerning long-term peace with Iran, and peace in the Middle East,” he stated.

The U.S. President further revealed that a proposal from Iran has laid the groundwork for negotiations.

“We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate,” he said.

In a corresponding response from Tehran, Iran signaled readiness to reciprocate the de-escalation. The official statement, issued by Foreign Affairs Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on behalf of the Islamic Republic, acknowledged the mediation efforts and outlined Iran’s position.

“If attacks against Iran are halted, our powerful Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations,” the statement read.

Iran also confirmed its willingness to support stability in global trade routes during the ceasefire period.

“For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible,” the statement added.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints, making this commitment a significant confidence-building measure for global markets.

Both statements reflect a rare moment of alignment between Washington and Tehran, following years of heightened tensions and intermittent conflict. The involvement of Pakistan’s leadership has also been widely recognized as a constructive step toward regional diplomacy.

The two-week ceasefire window is now seen as a decisive opportunity to finalize a broader peace framework, one that could usher in stability across the Middle East.

This development signals a powerful shift from confrontation to dialogue, offering renewed hope that sustained engagement and cooperation can deliver lasting peace for the region and beyond.
