MBABANE– Underage children can now register MTN Eswatini SIM cards using their birth certificates, making the registration process more accessible to young users who do not yet have national identity documents.
MTN Customer Experience Officer Sboniso Dlamini said the development forms part of efforts to ensure that customers are properly identified while strengthening SIM registration.
Dlamini revealed this during a media engagement on data depletion, SIM registration and scams held at the MTN Service Centre in Mbabane on Wednesday.
He said the change allows underage children to use their birth certificates when registering MTN SIM cards, removing the need for them to have an identity document before accessing the service.
Dlamini said the measure is also intended to prevent the misuse of mobile numbers by individuals who register multiple SIM cards.
The officer also revealed that MTN has stopped using the traditional MoMo books previously used by agents to record customer transactions when depositing or withdrawing money from their MoMo accounts.
He said the decision followed concerns that the books could expose customers to scammers by revealing sensitive information, including identity numbers and the amount of money in a customer’s MoMo account.
Dlamini said discontinuing the books forms part of efforts to protect customers’ personal and financial information and reduce opportunities for scammers to access sensitive details.
He urged customers to remain cautious when providing personal information during transactions and not to share confidential details unnecessarily.
Dlamini further advised customers who encounter suspicious activity to stop and think before taking action, verify the information with the relevant organisation and report the incident.
He said reporting suspected scams was particularly important as it could help prevent another person from becoming a victim.
