LESOTHO – The University of Eswatini (UNESWA) Chorale Choir has brought pride to the country after securing top honours at the BOLESWA Intervarsity Games held in Lesotho on Sunday.
The choir delivered an impressive performance against universities from across the region, proving that determination and technical excellence can triumph even against larger groups. According to conductor Tumelo Shongwe, the victory was a proud and emotional moment for the choir and the university.
“It is truly an honour and a proud moment for the UNESWA Chorale Choir to have won at the BOLESWA Intervarsity Games in Lesotho. This victory represents the hard work, resilience and passion of our choir members,” said Shongwe. Preparation for the competition was intense, with the choir having only two to three weeks to rehearse five songs for the event. Despite the limited preparation time, members remained disciplined and committed to delivering their best performance.
Shongwe explained that the choir faced stiff competition from universities with significantly larger choirs. UNESWA performed with about 30 singers, while some competing universities had more than 50 members. Instead of relying on volume, the choir focused on technical precision, musical interpretation and strong execution. That approach ultimately helped them stand out from the competition.
The UNESWA Chorale Choir competed in four categories and achieved remarkable results. They secured first place in African music, Female Voice and Male Voice categories, while finishing second in the Western category. In addition to the choir’s success, Shongwe was also recognised for his leadership and musical direction after receiving the Best Conductor Award. “This recognition is humbling and hopefully the first of many,” he said.
Shongwe added that the victory highlights the potential of choral music at the university and could open doors for greater recognition and support. The choir hopes to grow into a fully recognised musical ensemble within the university and eventually represent the institution at national and international choral competitions across the SADC region and beyond. The achievement marks a significant milestone for the University of Eswatini Chorale Choir as it continues to elevate the university’s cultural presence on regional platforms.
