WHAT HAPPENS BEFORE A PATIENT RECEIVES RADIATION TREATMENT?

MANZINI – For a patient, radiation treatment can look like a few minutes inside a treatment room. But before that moment arrives, a team has already spent time working out exactly where the radiation needs to go  and, just as importantly, where it should not.

Radiation Therapist Nonjabuliso Nxumalo explained that the process begins with the dose prescribed by the doctor and the capabilities of the treatment machine. “The machines used are designed to deliver the radiation doses prescribed by the doctor accurately and safely,” Nxumalo said.

From there, a treatment plan is developed around the patient. The tumour or disease becomes the target, while the healthy organs and tissues surrounding it must be considered throughout the planning process.

The aim is to give the tumour the prescribed dose while keeping radiation exposure to nearby normal organs within their accepted tolerance levels. For patients, that balance is important because treatment is not only about attacking the disease. It is also about limiting unnecessary damage to the healthy parts of the body.

Nxumalo said the treatment plan is assessed using established radiation protocols and dose tolerances for different structures in the body. The plan is then carefully checked against the relevant safety and treatment-planning criteria before it can be approved. Only after these checks have been completed is the plan transferred to the treatment machine.

The patient can then receive the prescribed treatment through a linear accelerator, which delivers high-energy X-rays to the tumour while limiting exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. What happens in the treatment room is therefore only one part of a much longer process.

For the patient, it may simply be a machine delivering radiation. Behind that moment, however, is a carefully prepared plan built around one central objective treating the tumour while protecting as much healthy tissue as possible.
