MBABANE- The Eswatini Epilepsy Organisation (EEO), which operates under the patronage of HRH Prince Bandzile, has provided an update on the development of the underway E20 million Epilepsy Centre at Mpaka, along the road to Sikhuphe International Airport.
EEO Director Abraham Ntshalintshali said on January 15, 2026 during a media briefing, the Yellow Epilepsy Charity Half-Marathon will be held on February 7, 2026, and is to contribute towards the construction of the centre.
The EEO Director said the centre is designed to function as a complete home for people living with epilepsy and other neurological disorders. “It will include a clinic, accommodation, vocational opportunities and social support under one roof,” he said.
“In other developed countries, people with epilepsy are treated in specialised neurological facilities, but in Eswatini they are often managed in general health or mental health settings, even though epilepsy is a neurological disorder.”
He emphasised that the centre will provide dignity and improve the quality of life for people living with epilepsy. “Residents will receive proper medical care while also engaging in productive work and daily life in a safe environment,” he added.
Abraham Ntshalintsali explained that the E20 million allocation is meant for the completion of the first phase of the project. Progress so far includes the fencing of the 4.5-hectare site, the start of contracting works, and the construction of two buildings. The centre will also house the headquarters of the Eswatini Epilepsy Organisation.
The director said the Lubombo location was selected due to environmental and safety considerations. “Extreme heat can trigger seizures, and the corridor between Malindza and Lonhlupheko is prone to road accidents and wildfires,” he said. He assured the public that, despite being based in Lubombo, the organisation will continue to operate nationwide.
“The centre is for everyone with epilepsy to call it home, a safe place where all their needs will be met,” Ntshalintshali concluded.
He also shared full details of the Yellow Epilepsy Charity Half-Marathon, which will take place on February 7, 2026 at the EOCGA offices in Lobamba, next to Somhlolo National Stadium. All participants will receive medals, while winners will walk away with cash prizes. The Early Bird Registration deadline has been extended to January 28, 2026.
