MBABANE– The Kingdom of Eswatini could be on the verge of securing one of the largest private-sector renewable energy investments in its history after Zimbabwean billionaire businessman and philanthropist Wicknell Munodaani Chivayo announced plans to invest approximately E3 billion in a 300-megawatt solar power project following a high-level engagement with His Majesty King Mswati III.
The proposed investment, which is expected to strengthen the country’s energy security, stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities, was announced after Chivayo was received by His Majesty at the Lozitha Royal Palace last Thursday.
The meeting, which focused on investment opportunities, infrastructure development and renewable energy cooperation, has generated considerable interest within business and economic circles as Eswatini continues to pursue ambitious plans aimed at achieving energy self-sufficiency and attracting strategic foreign direct investment.
In a significant gesture that displayed the importance of the engagement, His Majesty King Mswati III granted Chivayo Eswatini citizenship and presented him with a diplomatic passport in recognition of his philanthropic work across Africa and his commitment to supporting development initiatives within the Kingdom.
The move signals growing confidence in Eswatini as an investment destination and highlights Government’s continued efforts to attract influential investors capable of contributing meaningfully to national development.
A project that could transform the energy landscape
At the centre of the discussions was Chivayo’s commitment, through his Mauritius-based company Intratrek Holdings, to develop a 300MW Independent Power Producer solar project in Eswatini.
The project will reportedly be developed on approximately 120 hectares of land and is expected to inject E3 billion into the local economy during its development phase.
Energy experts note that a 300MW solar facility would represent a major addition to Eswatini’s power generation capacity and significantly reduce dependence on imported electricity.
For years, Eswatini has pursued a strategy aimed at increasing local electricity generation to support industrialisation, mining, agriculture and emerging sectors of the economy.
The proposed solar plant therefore aligns closely with Government’s broader energy strategy, which seeks to diversify energy sources while embracing cleaner and more sustainable technologies.
Once operational, the project is expected to generate substantial quantities of electricity capable of supporting industries, businesses and households while also helping to meet growing national demand.

Jobs, business opportunities and economic growth
Beyond electricity generation, the investment is expected to unlock numerous economic opportunities.
Large-scale renewable energy projects typically create hundreds of jobs during construction and dozens of permanent technical and operational positions after completion.
The development could also stimulate demand for local suppliers, transport operators, engineering firms, security companies, construction businesses and various support services.
Economists argue that investments of this magnitude have a multiplier effect throughout the economy, creating secondary opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs.
The anticipated project comes at a time when Government is intensifying efforts to create employment opportunities and attract investment capable of accelerating economic growth.
Should the project proceed as planned, it would rank among the most significant renewable energy developments ever undertaken in the Kingdom.
Who is Wicknell Chivayo?
Chivayo is one of Zimbabwe’s most recognised businessmen and philanthropists.
Over the years, he has built interests across multiple sectors, including renewable energy, thermal and hydroelectric power generation, engineering, infrastructure development, road construction and large-scale development projects.
His company, Intratrek Holdings, has become associated with energy and infrastructure initiatives across the region.
In addition to his business activities, Chivayo has attracted attention for extensive philanthropic work.
According to information shared during the royal engagement, he has committed more than US$200 million, approximately E3.6 billion, towards humanitarian and charitable initiatives across Zimbabwe and other African countries within the past year alone.
His donations have reportedly supported disadvantaged families, educational initiatives, healthcare interventions, youth empowerment programmes and community development projects.
These contributions formed part of the basis upon which His Majesty recognised him during the Royal Palace engagement.
Supporting Eswatini’s development vision
The proposed investment arrives at a crucial moment for Eswatini.
Government has repeatedly emphasised the importance of attracting private-sector capital to accelerate infrastructure development, create jobs and support economic transformation.
Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has consistently highlighted energy security as a key pillar for industrial growth and national competitiveness.
The Kingdom has also been actively promoting investment in renewable energy as part of efforts to build a resilient and sustainable economy.
A successful implementation of the solar project would support these objectives while positioning Eswatini as an increasingly attractive destination for green energy investment.
A vote of confidence in Eswatini
Analysts say Chivayo’s decision to commit such a substantial investment sends a positive signal to international investors.
Foreign investors often look closely at the experiences of other investors before making decisions on where to deploy capital.
A project of this scale demonstrates confidence in Eswatini’s political stability, investment climate and long-term economic prospects.
The engagement between His Majesty and Chivayo therefore extends beyond a single investment proposal.
It represents a broader message that Eswatini remains open for business and willing to partner with investors who share the country’s development aspirations.
As the Kingdom continues pursuing economic growth, industrial expansion and energy security, investments such as the proposed E3 billion solar project could play a vital role in shaping the next chapter of national development.
For many emaSwati, the prospect of a major renewable energy project, new jobs and expanded economic activity offers a glimpse into the transformative possibilities that strategic investment can bring to the nation.
