MBABANE- Women are increasingly recognized as essential contributors to economic growth, innovation, and sustainable development. Their ideas, creativity, and leadership are transforming how societies approach economic issues, from financial inclusion to green innovation and education.
Deputy Governor Felicia Dlamini-Kunene highlighted this on September 26, 2025, when she launched the UNESWA Economics Society Mentorship Programme under the theme “Trailblazers in Economics: Driving Innovation and a Sustainable Future.” She emphasized that no lasting economy can be built without women’s full and active participation.
“Women were the farmers, traders, entrepreneurs, and family managers. They were the original economic thinkers, solving everyday challenges with creativity and smart solutions. Yet, their work was often called unpaid labour and excluded from formal economic discussions,” she said.
According to Dlamini-Kunene, women do more than contribute, they transform economic conversations. “When women are given a seat at the table, they change the discussion entirely, introducing new ideas, different priorities, and fresh perspectives,” she said.
The Deputy Governor noted that financial inclusion and literacy empower women to access resources, grow businesses, and make informed economic decisions; green innovation and climate resilience showcase women’s role in developing environmentally friendly solutions and sustainable practices; and education and mentorship ensure that knowledge, skills, and leadership are passed on to the next generation.
She encouraged young economists and students to embrace mentorship, innovate boldly, and actively participate in shaping economic policies. “Empowering women in economic issues is not only fair, but it also strengthens the economy, inspires creativity, and builds a sustainable future for all,” she concluded.
