PIGGS PEAK– The Piggs Peak Town Council has stepped in to support the Shiba family of Malandalahle after their home collapsed under the weight of relentless heavy rains and a shifting donga.
The disaster, which has sent shockwaves through the neighborhood, prompted an immediate high-level visit from the Council’s Mayor, CEO, and senior management. The delegation met with the family to assess the damage and provide a direct assurance that they would not be left to face this crisis alone.
A Proactive Response to a Growing Risk
While the collapse was triggered by recent persistent storms, the Town Council had already been monitoring the area. Recognizing the inherent danger posed by the nearby donga, the Council had proactively allocated a new plot of land for the family last year following a series of thorough technical assessments.
“The safety of our residents is our absolute priority,” the Council stated. “Recognizing the urgency of the current situation, we have now fast-tracked the relocation process to ensure the Shiba family is moved to a safer, permanent location as quickly as possible.”
Relief Efforts in Full Swing
In the wake of the incident, the Council has coordinated a massive relief effort alongside the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and various community stakeholders. The family is currently receiving a comprehensive support package, including:
- Temporary Shelter: Immediate housing to ensure safety from the ongoing rains.
- Essential Supplies: Regular delivery of food parcels and clothing.
- Household Items: Provision of bedding and other necessities to maintain dignity and comfort during the transition.
Securing the Future of Malandalahle
The Council’s response extends beyond a single household. A comprehensive risk assessment is currently underway for all properties in the vicinity of the donga. Management aims to identify any other homes at risk of soil instability to prevent similar tragedies before they occur.
“Council remains committed to supporting residents in need during unforeseen circumstances,” the local authority reaffirmed. The commitment to the Shiba family remains firm: humanitarian aid will continue unabated until they are safely settled in their new, secure home.
