MBABANE – Minister of Education and Training Owen Nxumalo has expressed gratitude to Government, particularly Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg, for the allocation granted to his ministry during the 2026 National Budget.
Speaking in the House of Assembly on Wednesday during debate on the National Budget Speech, Nxumalo thanked Government for prioritising education. His remarks were met with laughter from Members of Parliament when he assured the House that he would not take long, noting that the Ministry had already achieved significant milestones.
Nxumalo highlighted that the long-standing matter of contract teachers would receive attention. He acknowledged that some educators have remained on contract for approximately 10 years and assured the House that the ministry is committed to working towards a sustainable solution. He further emphasised that the planned roll-out of A Levels would not have been possible without the financial support provided in the current budget.
The National Budget was tabled by Neal Rijkenberg and drew keen interest from MPs across the political spectrum. Debate began at 2 30pm and was still ongoing at 6 30pm, reflecting the significance of the allocations and the strong views held by legislators.
While welcoming the funding, several MPs stressed that further improvements were needed within the education sector. Hhohho Region MP Zanele Magagula described the allocation, although it represents a substantial share of the national budget, as “a drop in the sea” when measured against existing challenges. She raised concerns that the cost of A Level subjects, reportedly over E2 500 per subject, could pose implementation difficulties, particularly when schools are still grappling with the current syllabus.
Other Members of Parliament urged Government to explore the feasibility of introducing free high school education. They commended Government for successfully implementing free primary education, but noted that many learners face obstacles progressing beyond that level due to financial constraints.
Despite differing perspectives, the debate reflected a shared commitment to strengthening the education system and expanding opportunities for learners across the country. The discussions underscored Parliament’s collective interest in ensuring that budget allocations translate into tangible improvements in classrooms nationwide.
