EZULWINI– The Government of Eswatini and Taiwan were thanked by King Mswati III for successfully mobilising resources towards the construction of a world-class International Convention Centre (ICC).
The project he described as a major national investment set to transform the country’s economic prospects.
Speaking during a grand dinner held at the newly opened International Convention Centre, the King directed his remarks to Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, Lin Chia-lung, who attended as special envoy.
“Minister, kindly convey my heartfelt thanks to His Excellency Lai Ching-te, who could not be with us today due to other commitments. He had earlier informed me of his intention to attend and had prepared all necessary resources for the journey,” said the King.
He said Taiwan’s continued support, alongside the Government of Eswatini’s leadership and financial commitment, had been instrumental in delivering the landmark project, which is expected to position the country as a competitive destination for international conferences and tourism.
“This project stands as a testimony of what we can achieve when we mobilise resources and work together towards a common vision of development,” he said.
Taiwan supported the ICC through significant financial loans provided via its Export-Import Bank, which contributed to the construction of the multi-billion facility.
The Asian nation also facilitated technical oversight through CECI Engineering Consultants Inc., which supervised the project to ensure quality control and compliance with international standards.
The King also recognised the contribution of international project leadership from the United Arab Emirates, including architects, contractors and project managers who executed the development.
At national level, he acknowledged the Government of Eswatini, for coordinating the project and providing sustained financial support through national budget allocations.
Among those present at the high-profile dinner were regional leaders and dignitaries, including Cyril Ramaphosa, King Letsie III and King Misuzulu kaZwelithini. Former heads of state in attendance included Ian Khama, Jacob Zuma.
Meanwhile, President Lai Ching-te addressed guests through a video message aired at the ICC theatre, reaffirming Taiwan’s commitment to supporting Eswatini’s development.
The high-level dinner, attended by royalty, dignitaries and international partners, formed part of celebrations marking the King’s 40 years on the throne and his 58th birthday, while showcasing the ICC as a flagship national project aimed at delivering long-term economic benefits.
The completion of the ICC signals Eswatini’s firm entry into the global conferencing and tourism market, with expectations that the facility will attract high-level international events, stimulate investment and create lasting economic opportunities for emaSwati.
