SIKHUPHE – Government has officially opened Phase One of the new diplomatic lounges at King Mswati III International Airport, marking another major step in strengthening Eswatini’s readiness to host high-level international engagements and global conferences.
The lounges, designed specifically for diplomats and international dignitaries arriving in the Kingdom, are expected to enhance the country’s diplomatic infrastructure by providing a secure, professional and dignified environment for foreign delegates conducting official business while transiting through the airport.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Senator Pholile Shakantu, on Friday escorted Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini on a guided tour of the newly completed facilities before the Premier’s departure to Kenya.
Speaking during the tour, Senator Shakantu said the establishment of the diplomatic lounges demonstrates Eswatini’s commitment to adhering to international standards governing the treatment and handling of diplomats at ports of entry.
“The opening of these diplomatic lounges aligns with international law standards regarding the treatment of diplomats at airports. This establishment reflects Eswatini’s commitment to upholding these standards, providing a specialized area where diplomats can engage and conduct business in a secure and dignified manner,” said the Minister.
The development comes at a strategic time as Eswatini positions itself to host more regional and international meetings, conferences and investment forums.
Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini noted that the lounges will work hand in hand with the recently opened Ezulwini Palazzo ICC, which has already elevated the country’s profile as an emerging destination for international conferences and diplomatic engagements.
The Premier said the facilities will contribute significantly towards improving the experience of visiting delegates while reinforcing Eswatini’s image as a welcoming and globally connected nation.
He expressed confidence that the Kingdom is steadily building the infrastructure and institutional capacity necessary to successfully host major international gatherings.
The Prime Minister further reaffirmed Government’s commitment to promoting dialogue, international cooperation and shared global values through diplomacy and constructive engagement with the international community.
The diplomatic lounges are expected to play an important role in facilitating smoother interactions between visiting delegations, government officials and diplomatic missions, while also strengthening Eswatini’s standing within regional and international diplomatic circles.
The opening of Phase One forms part of broader efforts by His Majesty’s Government to modernize strategic national infrastructure and create world-class facilities capable of supporting economic growth, tourism development and international cooperation.
With the continued expansion of diplomatic and conference infrastructure, Eswatini is increasingly positioning itself as a competitive hub for global dialogue, diplomacy and investment in the region.
