MBABANE – Team Eswatini has returned home from the 2026 Southern African Championships (SACA) in Mauritius after a campaign marked by determination, competitive performances, and a historic medal achievement.
The highlight of the championships came when Mvuselelo Mkhwanazi secured Eswatini’s first medal of the competition, claiming bronze in the U20 Men’s 400m final with a time of 51.13 seconds. His achievement ensured that Team Eswatini returned home with a place on the podium and a memorable moment for the nation’s athletics programme.

The championships also saw several athletes progressing to the latter stages of their respective events. Machawe Mahlalela booked a place in the U20 Men’s 100m final after clocking 10.69 seconds in the semifinals to finish fourth and secure qualification. He later finished seventh in the final with a time of 10.70 seconds.
Bandzile Simelane continued Eswatini’s strong showing in the sprint events by reaching the U20 Men’s 200m final. He qualified after producing an impressive performance in the semifinals, finishing fourth in Heat One with a time of 22.00 seconds. Earlier in the championships, he narrowly missed out on a place in the 100m final after finishing fifth in his semifinal heat in 10.70 seconds.
In the women’s competition, Yoliswa Simelane displayed great determination in the U20 Women’s 100m event, finishing fourth in her semifinal heat with a time of 13.12 seconds, narrowly missing qualification for the final.

Throughout the championships, the athletes competed against some of the region’s best young talents and gained valuable international experience that will contribute to their development.
The team, which also included middle-distance runner Earnshaw Sibonakaliso, was guided by travelling coach Siyabonga Ngwenya and represented the Kingdom with pride and commitment.
Athletics Eswatini thanked the athletes, coaches, management, and supporters who stood behind the team throughout the competition. The association also acknowledged the encouragement received from fans during the championships.
While the curtain has closed on SACA Championships 2026, Team Eswatini returns home with a bronze medal, several final appearances, and renewed motivation as preparations begin for future regional and international competitions.
