MBABANE – Eswatini’s digital transformation journey received fresh support on Wednesday as the European Union joined Government and partners in validating a national policy designed to strengthen data protection, innovation and public trust.
As the world increasingly relies on digital information to drive economies and improve services, Eswatini is taking important steps to ensure that data becomes a powerful resource that benefits both citizens and institutions.
The National Validation Workshop for the Draft National Data Governance Policy, held on 22 July at Sibane Sami Hotel, brought together Government representatives, development partners and key stakeholders to discuss a framework that will guide how data is collected, managed, shared and protected in the Kingdom.
At the centre of the discussions was the need to create a trusted digital environment where emaSwati can confidently engage with technology while knowing that their information is handled responsibly.
European Union (EU) Ambassador to Eswatini Karsten Mecklenburg reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting the country’s digital transformation, congratulating Government for reaching this significant milestone.
Ambassador Mecklenburg said building a national data governance system requires more than policy development. He highlighted the importance of shared responsibility, strong coordination and continued leadership to ensure that the policy delivers meaningful results.
He noted that in today’s digital age, data has become a strategic resource that can strengthen economic growth, improve public services, support evidence-based decisions and encourage innovation. However, he cautioned that these opportunities can only be unlocked when countries establish effective systems to govern and protect data.
“Validation should not be viewed as the destination,” Ambassador Mecklenburg said, stressing that the real success of the policy will depend on practical implementation through institutional cooperation, skills development, proper resources and sustained commitment.
For everyday citizens, stronger data governance could translate into safer digital services, improved access to information and increased confidence as more government and private sector services move online.
The initiative is supported through the Data Governance in Africa Initiative, where the European Union partners with the African Union Commission, AUDA-NEPAD, Smart Africa and GIZ to help African countries strengthen their data governance systems in line with the African Union Data Policy Framework.
As Eswatini advances towards a more connected future, the policy represents a significant step towards ensuring that technology serves people, protects rights and creates opportunities for innovation.
The focus now shifts from validation to implementation, where collaboration and action will determine how successfully Eswatini builds a trusted digital ecosystem for generations to come.
