MBABANE– For young athletes competing at community level, walking away with a medal or lifting a trophy can mean far more than simply winning a game. It can become a lasting reminder that their talent, effort and determination have been recognised.
It is against this backdrop that businessman and Matsapha Town Councillor Boniface Xolisa Mdluli has continued to throw his weight behind grassroots sport, recently sponsoring medals and a trophy for community games hosted by Hlutse at Sibusisweni Sports Ground.
The sponsorship added excitement and significance to the games, ensuring that outstanding participants received tangible recognition for their performances while also helping encourage continued participation in community sport.
For young players, particularly those competing away from major sporting centres, such support can provide motivation and strengthen their belief that grassroots competitions remain an important pathway for developing talent.
Mdluli’s contribution at Sibusisweni is also part of a broader record of involvement in sport and community development.
In his corporate role representing Futis, he has previously spoken strongly about the importance of investing in football, especially at grassroots level where many young players first discover and develop their sporting abilities.
In May 2026, Mdluli represented Futis during celebrations marking the company’s long-standing partnership with the Hhohho Regional Football Association.
During the occasion, he emphasised the value of maintaining investment in football despite growing competition and economic challenges, noting the important role sport plays in the lives of young people.
Futis’ relationship with grassroots football has stretched over several years, with the company maintaining its involvement as the business expanded from its early operations in Siteki.
The continued support illustrates how businesses can play a meaningful role beyond their commercial activities by contributing towards initiatives that create recreational and developmental opportunities within communities.
Mdluli’s community involvement, however, extends beyond the football field.
As a Matsapha Town Councillor, he was elected Chairperson of the council’s Finance Committee in May 2025, placing him in a position that combines business experience with civic responsibility.
He has also used his public platform to advocate for greater economic participation by emaSwati.
During an engagement with parliamentarians, Mdluli raised concerns about access to commercial land and business licences for emaSwati, while calling for stronger participation by the private sector in the country’s economic development.
Youth development has similarly featured prominently in his community activities.
Through the Matsapha Town Council, Mdluli has participated in the Matsapha Career Day, an initiative aimed at exposing young people to career opportunities and helping them make informed decisions about their future.
He has also previously been associated with community-centred media initiatives as a funder of the Eswatini TV programme Makhelwane Simbona Ngetento, which focused on supporting communities and helping people improve their lives.
Taken together, his involvement stretches across grassroots sport, youth empowerment, business advocacy, civic leadership and community development.
The latest sponsorship at Sibusisweni therefore represents more than the provision of medals and a trophy.
It highlights how individuals and businesses can make a direct difference at community level, where even relatively modest investments can help keep sporting activities alive, recognise talent and inspire young people to remain positively engaged.
For communities, grassroots sporting competitions also provide spaces where residents can gather, strengthen social bonds and support young athletes pursuing their talents.
Mdluli’s continued involvement demonstrates the potential impact that can be achieved when business and civic leaders remain connected to the communities they serve.
And for the players who proudly received medals or competed for the trophy at Sibusisweni, the support provided another reason to keep training, competing and believing in what their sporting journey could become.
