EZULWINI– AlphSz and FNB Eswatini emerged as the standout performers in the second leg of the KFC/Pick n Pay Business Golf League, producing a thrilling battle for top honours at the Ezulwini Golf and Country Club on June 17.
In a contest decided by the narrowest of margins, AlphSz edged FNB Eswatini to the title after finishing with 69 points, just one point ahead of the bankers, who settled for second place on 68 points.
The victory marked a significant turnaround for AlphSz, who dethroned FNB Eswatini after the latter had claimed top honours in the opening leg of the competition. While AlphSz celebrated their first triumph of the campaign, FNB once again demonstrated remarkable consistency by securing another podium finish and remaining firmly in contention for overall league honours.
AlphSz’s winning effort was spearheaded by the pairing of Sabelo Gama and Sifiso Nxumalo, whose strong performance throughout the day proved decisive. On the other hand, FNB Eswatini relied on Thobekile Dlamini and Ncamiso Dlamini, who pushed the eventual champions all the way in one of the closest finishes seen in the league this season.
The tournament attracted 36 teams and was supported by an E80 000 sponsorship package. Golfers teed off early in the morning before concluding the day’s action with a prize-giving ceremony in the afternoon.
While the spotlight was firmly on the top two finishers, the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) completed the podium in third place with 67 points. Eswatini Royal Insurance Corporation (ESRIC) Team Two secured fourth position after winning a count-back against the Central Bank of Eswatini (CBE), with both teams ending the day on 66 points.
Speaking after guiding AlphSz to victory, Gama said the team had not anticipated winning the tournament.
“We came here today not expecting that we would walk away as victors. We are proud of this achievement and are determined to maintain this momentum and dominate the remaining legs of the league,” he said.
For AlphSz, the victory serves as a statement of intent in the race for league honours. For FNB Eswatini, the runner-up finish reinforces their status as one of the competition’s most consistent teams. With only a single point separating the two sides in the second leg, the battle between the corporate golf giants is shaping up to be one of the league’s defining storylines.
