MBABANE – As South Africa’s national football team, affectionately known as Bafana Bafana, prepares for a must-win 2026 FIFA World Cup Group A encounter against the Czech Republic this evening, Emaswati have thrown their full support behind their neighbours.
Across Eswatini, football supporters are expected to rally behind Hugo Broos’ side as they seek to revive their World Cup campaign following a disappointing 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in the tournament’s opening match. The close cultural, economic and sporting ties between Eswatini and South Africa have made Bafana Bafana the preferred team for many local football enthusiasts whenever the Kingdom is not involved in international competition.
South Africa’s World Cup journey got off to a difficult start at the iconic Estadio Azteca, where Mexico claimed victory through goals from Julian Quinones in the ninth minute and Raul Jimenez in the 67th minute. Mexico dominated large portions of the match, enjoying more possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities, while South Africa struggled to establish any sustained attacking threat.
The encounter was overshadowed by a series of disciplinary incidents that left Bafana Bafana with only nine men by the final whistle. Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio issued a straight red card to midfielder Sphephelo Sithole early in the second half after he denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity. The situation worsened in the closing stages when experienced midfielder Themba Zwane was sent off following a VAR review for striking Mexico’s Roberto Alvarado in the face during an off-the-ball incident. Mexico captain Cesar Montes was also dismissed late in the game, making it a match that produced three red cards.
Adding to South Africa’s woes, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has since extended Zwane’s punishment from the standard one-match suspension to a three-match ban. FIFA ruled that the incident constituted foul play serious enough to warrant additional sanctions, meaning the veteran midfielder will miss the clash against the Czech Republic and other upcoming group matches unless a successful appeal is lodged.
Broos has publicly questioned the severity of the punishment, insisting the decision was harsh, although he accepted the dismissal of Sithole as justified. The Belgian tactician now faces a significant selection headache ahead of the Czech Republic encounter, with two key midfielders unavailable at a time when South Africa desperately need points to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Despite the setback, optimism remains among Emaswati supporters who believe Bafana Bafana have the quality to bounce back. A positive result against the Czech Republic would reignite South Africa’s chances of progressing to the knockout stages and provide renewed hope for football fans across Southern Africa.
With national pride and regional support behind them, all eyes will be on Broos’ men this evening as they attempt to overcome adversity and keep their World Cup dream alive.
