MBABANE – About 60 church leaders from various faith groups gathered yesterday at The George Hotel for a half-day meeting focused on strengthening the role of religious institutions in promoting child protection.
The gathering was held under the theme “Yindzaba Yetfu Sonkhe” The leaders highlighted the power of collective action in securing a safe future for the nation’s children.
The faith leaders, representing Christian, Muslim, and Bahá’í communities, shared insights and pledged to use their influence to support families and prevent harm to children.

UNICEF Resident Representative Amina Mohammed reaffirmed UNICEF’s ongoing dedication to child safety. “We are committed to working with faith communities until every child lives free from fear,” she stated.
Speaking on behalf of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, Under Secretary Makhosi Simelane acknowledged the deep-rooted trust communities place in religious leaders. “Your voice carries weight,” he said. “You can help create safe homes and empower parents to raise children with care and compassion.”
Wandile Dlamini of the Council of Churches emphasized the need for churches to host open discussions about social challenges. “By offering safe spaces for dialogue, we help reduce the stress and frustration that sometimes result in harmful behavior,” he said.
Sitakele Maseko from the League of Churches encouraged faith leaders not to shy away from confronting issues affecting children. “Silence is dangerous. We must be bold and act before it’s too late,” she urged.
Nelile Maseko of the Bahá’í Faith called for greater collaboration between religious institutions and communities, while Sphendulile Dlamini from the Conference of Churches reminded participants that accountability must extend even within places of worship.

A representative from the Muslim community stressed the need for stronger ties with law enforcement and advocated responsible family planning to support safer upbringings.
The gathering ended with a shared resolution: to stand united in nurturing, protecting, and uplifting every child in every community.
