MBABANE – Government has delivered on its December 2025 promise to ensure that public servants receive their January salaries earlier than usual, with Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg confirming that salary payments will be made on the 15th and 19th of January 2026.

The decision has been warmly welcomed across the civil service, as it provides critical financial support ahead of the reopening of schools later in the month.

Speaking after the Treasury Department issued an official memorandum through the Accountant General, Nomsa B. Simelane, Minister Rijkenberg reaffirmed that the revised salary dates have already been communicated to banks and government ministries to guarantee smooth processing.

He said the move reflects government’s ongoing commitment to improving the welfare of public servants and responding to their practical needs.

The Minister noted that one of the key motivations behind the earlier payment is to ensure that civil servants are able to settle school fees and related education expenses on time.

With schools expected to reopen around January 20, the early salary schedule is expected to ease financial pressure on thousands of families who ordinarily face back-to-school demands at this time of year.

“We believe this adjustment will make a meaningful difference for public servants and their households,” Rijkenberg explained. “January is traditionally a demanding month financially, especially with school preparations. By bringing salaries forward, government is helping employees prepare with confidence and stability.”

The January 2026 payment arrangement applies to employees who normally receive salaries between the 20th and 24th, as well as those paid at the end of the month. Under the revised schedule, those workers will now be paid on January 15, while others will receive their salaries on January 19.

This initiative follows government’s assurance in December that January salaries would be prioritised as part of broader efforts to strengthen public service morale and support families during the school‑opening period. By honouring that commitment, government has reinforced trust and demonstrated a constructive approach to employee welfare.

Public servants have expressed appreciation for the announcement, highlighting that timely access to income at the beginning of the year will help them plan better, avoid debt, and meet key responsibilities such as tuition, uniforms, transport and household needs.

With this positive development, government has set an encouraging tone for 2026, one that emphasises partnership, responsibility and practical support for the nation’s workforce.
