MBABANE– Educating the public on how to identify and avoid scams is key to eliminating ‘BoFacata’, MTN Customer Experience Officer Sboniso Dlamini said during a media engagement on data depletion, SIM registration and scams held at the MTN Service Centre in Mbabane on Wednesday.
Dlamini urged emaSwati to remain vigilant and never share confidential information such as Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and One-Time Passwords (OTPs) with anyone claiming to represent MTN, banks or other organisations, even when promising jobs, money, prizes or other rewards.
He warned that scammers often use attractive offers to lure unsuspecting people into clicking suspicious links or providing sensitive information, including identity numbers and other personal details.
Dlamini advised people who receive suspicious calls or messages to stop and think before making any decision, rather than acting out of panic or excitement.
He said customers should verify suspicious communication directly with the organisation allegedly making the request, particularly when the communication claims to be from MTN, a bank or another service provider.
For MTN customers, he said suspicious communication can be verified by calling 922 before providing any information or following instructions from an unknown source.
“OTPs and PINs are confidential,” Dlamini stressed, warning customers never to disclose them to anyone, regardless of who the person claims to be.
He also encouraged the public to report suspected scam attempts, saying reporting an incident can protect not only the person targeted but also the next potential victim.
“Report, because you are protecting the next person,” Dlamini said.
He explained that a reported scam could help protect a family member, friend or another customer from falling victim to the same fraudulent scheme.
Dlamini further cautioned the public against clicking suspicious links, urging people to first verify whether a message or offer is genuine before taking any action.
He said educating others about common scam tactics remains an important tool in the fight against fraud, as increased awareness can help people recognise suspicious approaches before they lose money or expose their personal information.
