MBABANE Eswatini strengthened its fight against climate change on March 27, 2026 with the handover of a Refrigerant Recovery Vehicle at the United Nations House, marking a key step towards improving the management of harmful cooling gases and protecting the environment.

The vehicle was handed over through a partnership between the Government of Eswatini and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support the safe recovery, recycling, and reuse of refrigerants. This initiative is aimed at reducing emissions that contribute to ozone layer depletion and climate change, while strengthening the country’s environmental protection systems.

Refrigerants, commonly used in cooling systems such as air conditioners and refrigerators, can pose serious environmental and health risks if not properly managed. The introduction of the recovery vehicle is expected to improve how these substances are handled across their lifecycle, helping to prevent harmful gases from being released into the atmosphere.

The initiative supports Eswatini’s commitments under the Montreal Protocol and aligns with its Nationally Determined Contributions, which focus on reducing emissions and building climate resilience. It also promotes a circular economy by encouraging the reuse and safe disposal of materials.

Stakeholders highlighted that the development reflects Eswatini’s proactive approach to addressing environmental challenges, while also safeguarding public health and supporting sustainable development. Collaboration between government and development partners was identified as key in driving such impactful initiatives.

The handover marks a significant step in strengthening national capacity to manage environmental risks and protect future generations, reinforcing the country’s commitment to climate action and environmental sustainability.
