MBABANE- Eswatini will host the Region 5 Golf Championship from May 4 to 9 at the Ezulwini Golf & Country Club, with nine countries confirming participation in the prestigious regional event.
Each country will be represented by four players and one official. All teams will be accommodated at Happy Valley Motel from Monday until Saturday.Only Angola will miss the tournament, while Lesotho is set to make its maiden appearance in the competition.
The official opening ceremony will be held on Tuesday, which will also serve as a practice day to allow players to familiarise themselves with the course. Competitive action will begin on Wednesday and run for three days, with the closing ceremony scheduled for Friday.
The championship will be staged under the auspices of the Africa Golf Confederation. Its president, Jonathan Olomu of Uganda, and Region 5 Coordinator Chris Mulenga from Zambia are expected to attend.
The tournament has received financial and logistical support from the National Sports & Recreation Council, The R&A, Happy Valley Hotel, AD Enterprises and the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association.Eswatini Golf Union president Jacques Potgieter said preparations were progressing smoothly and thanked sponsors for their contribution.
He said hosting the event would help improve the standard of golf in Eswatini, particularly among local national team players, while also generating revenue for the country through visiting teams and officials.Potgieter added that the tournament could further promote Eswatini as a tourism destination.
The host nation will be represented by Mongi Masuku, Machawe Maziya, Nathi Tsabedze and Nkululeko Mngometulu. Team manager is seasoned golfer Valentine Maziya, who competed in last year’s championship in Botswana.
Three players qualified through the national order of merit rankings, while Tsabedze secured the final spot after winning a recent play-off.Golf fans have been invited to attend the tournament over the three competition days at Ezulwini.
