MBABANE – Eswatini and South Africa are strengthening their partnership to improve the efficiency and reliability of the Oshoek–Ngwenya Border Post, with both countries making steady progress towards creating a seamless border experience that supports trade, investment and regional integration.
Stakeholders from the two neighbouring countries met during a two-day technical working session held under the National Trade Facilitation Initiative. The meeting brings together government officials and technical experts to review progress made so far while identifying practical solutions to further enhance border operations.
Discussions are focused on improving trade facilitation, border infrastructure, operational efficiency, digital connectivity and cooperation between border agencies. The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to simplify cross-border trade and movement, while ensuring that security and compliance standards are maintained.
The technical working session has highlighted several milestones already achieved through the partnership. These include reduced truck turnaround times, improved risk management systems, coordinated inspections by border authorities and stronger collaboration between Eswatini and South African institutions.
The improvements are expected to benefit traders, transporters and travellers by reducing delays, lowering transport costs and creating a more predictable and efficient border crossing process. A well-functioning border also contributes to increased trade competitiveness and supports economic growth in both countries. Participants are also discussing strategies to strengthen digital systems and information sharing between the two countries, recognising that technology plays an important role in modernising border management and improving service delivery.
The outcomes of the technical working session will be presented to the Steering Committee during its meeting scheduled for 6 August 2026. The recommendations are expected to guide the next phase of implementation as both countries continue working towards a secure, efficient and integrated border post. As implementation progresses, the initiative is expected to further strengthen trade links between the two countries while supporting broader regional integration objectives within the Southern African region.
